Why Learn From Me?

I'm Carla Gover, an 8th-generation Kentuckian, traditional musician, and recognized Master Artist for the Kentucky Folk Program. With 30 years of teaching experience and awards for both digital curriculum design ("NETA Award") and dance instruction ("Appy Award"), I've helped over 300 students transform from hesitant step-collectors into confident dancers who can improvise at any festival or jam.

More importantly: I didn't just study this tradition—I grew up in it. I carry this culture and proudly pass it down as I learned it from my elders.

Your Purchase Gives Back

When you complete your purchase, you'll vote for one of these Kentucky nonprofits to receive 10% of your contribution:

Cowan Community Center (Whitesburg, KY)
Home of the Cowan Creek Mountain Music School, this community center brings old-time musicians from around the world to teach in Letcher County while also running vital programs like Grow Appalachia, summer food programs, and youth camps that keep mountain culture alive for the next generation.

Kentucky Heartwood
The only forest advocacy nonprofit in Kentucky focused on protecting public wildlands. Through science-based grassroots advocacy, Kentucky Heartwood works to stop old-growth logging in the Daniel Boone National Forest—including the land along the Redbird River that inspired my song "Me & The Redbird River."

Every purchase makes a difference. Your vote matters.

What Students Are Saying

"I realized after probably 4 or 5 months of research trying to just watch free YouTube videos that I wasn't going to be able to grow with this and really learn the steps I needed... But thanks to Carla's academy, I'm learning to improvise and feel more natural. It's like I've found the confidence I knew was there all along." —Catherine

"I had fears about joining the program because I'm 67. I wondered, 'Am I too old to do this? Am I fit enough?' The Academy has been the perfect fit, because you can do it at your own speed. Joining was a leap of faith, but it turned out to be the most enriching decision of my retired life." —Cheryl

"We went to the Floyd Country Store... I did my basic Flat Footing steps with a few of the other moves that I've learned so far in class. I know that there were several people watching me and trying to imitate my feet. So, that really made it for me. It was too cool!!" —Michael

"Without AFCA I might still be in the dumps. Yes I have amazing Kids and Grandchildren and the Best Friends ever. But joining this pushed me to find joy in a new way. You can't help but smile!" —Diann
