Foundational Steps

We'll start with a handful of my all-time favorite, simple, and versatile steps that you can mix and match in so many ways, to build on as you grow in your dancing. (Spoiler: You don't have to know a ton of steps to be a GREAT DANCER!)

Creating Muscle Memory

We'll continue by learning the best strategies for internalizing the steps and committing them to your muscle memory so that you can access them with fluidity and start dancing and improvising quickly.

The Flatfooting Formula

I'll show you the exact formula that I use every time I dance, that will help you improvise with confidence so you can "dance the tune!

Change the Way You Show Up on the Dance Floor!

In this class, I'm really excited to combine my love of Appalachian music, dance, AND culture! But most of all, I'm excited to help you gain a deeper understanding of how the dance fits with the music, how to practice for maximum results, and how to actually put together the steps you know and start dancing today!

This workshop is for you if...

  • You love Appalachian music and dance and you’ve always wanted to learn more about it
  • You already dance, but this is a new style for you or you just need a shot of inspiration and new ideas.
  • You want to get to where you can improvise freely to live music
YES, THAT'S ME!

Maybe the self-doubt thoughts have run through your mind...but deep down, you know you can DO this!

You just need a little bit of encouragement, some clear, easy-to-follow instructions, and a proven formula for learning no matter what your age, skill set, or background.

🌟 It's how my student, Diann, learned to dance during retirement after losing her husband, and now she performs regularly with a band and improvises to live music all the time!

🌟It's how my student Cheryl went from knowing "no steps" to improvising to up-tempo fiddle and banjo tunes, just by adding brief practice sessions into her morning routine.

"After taking flatfooting workshops at several festivals, for the first time I'm FINALLY putting multiple steps together instead of just trying to do the same couple of steps over and over!"

Erin Mae, Dulcimer Instructor

"Thanks to Carla, I'm learning to improvise and feel natural. It's like I've found the confidence I knew was there all along!

-Catherine, Homemaker and banjo player

I Get It.

YOU'RE TIRED.

...of spending hours searching up dance tutorials on YouTube, and struggling to figure out how they're making all those sounds with their feet.

...of taking a workshop here and there at a festival, but never really knowing how you're supposed to put all the steps you've learned together.

...of learning steps devoid of cultural context, and without knowing how they fit hand-in-glove with traditional Appalachian Music.

Maybe you've even felt frustrated and like you're just not "coordinated" or "talented" enough to do what seems so easy for those dancers you see at the festivals.

But what if I told you that you don't need TONS OF STEPS, natural talent, or the skill of Fred Astaire to learn to improvise with fluency, confidence, and joy?

In this training, I'll show you EXACTLY how I use a handful of steps plus an easy-as-cornbread formula to improvise on repeat to any fiddle tune my heart desires!

Let me teach you how!

A Personal Invitation from Carla ...

Appalachian Musician & Dancer

Creator of the Appalachian Flatfooting & Clogging Online Academy

I’m from Eastern Kentucky, and I’ve spent my whole life learning and sharing the beautiful cultural, musical, and dance heritage of our region.

After teaching thousands of students over the past 30+ years I’ve discovered the methods that help my students learn and internalize not just the dance steps, but the relationship they have with the music of the mountains.

This workshop is a culmination of what I’ve learned about helping my students become confident, fluent improvisers and dancers.

If you’re interested in dancing to live music, learning more steps, and having more fun, I can’t wait to share what I have learned with you so that this can be the year you finally become the dancer you’ve dreamed of being!

I'm excited to host you live for this workshop!

See you there!

Why is this class free?

I'm a professional full-time performer and teacher of Appalachian Music & Dance. I couldn't share what I do without earning a living, and so I offer many paid classes and courses.

However, I offer frequent opportunities to take my classes and enjoy my music at no cost. I want people to be able to enjoy dance even if they are of limited means.

At the same time, these free classes are a good way to get a taste of my teaching style for those who ARE interested in my paid classes.

So, in case you were curious, you're welcome to take this class with no strings attached, and it is full of valuable content. But at the end, I'll share more about my online dance offerings for those who ARE interested.
